PRESS RELEASE
Truro Receives $250 Thousand Municipal Fiber Grant from State of Massachusetts
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 10, 2023 – The Town of Truro is a 2024 recipient of a $250 thousand State of Massachusetts Municipal Fiber Grant. Truro is one of 43 grantees benefiting from a total of $9 million in funds. The Massachusetts Municipal Fiber Grant program is a competitive grant program that supports the closing of critical gaps that exist in municipal networks by funding the construction, and or completion, of a municipal fiber network.
Municipal Fiber Grant Funds are intended to assist municipalities in achieving critical goals associated with their municipal fiber networks. In Truro, the funds are earmarked for connecting seven outlying municipal facilities to the town’s existing Fiber/Wide Area Network (WAN). Currently Truro has a fiber WAN network connecting five locations:
- Town Hall
- DPW
- Public Safety Building
- Community Center
- Library
With this grant funding, the fiber network will be expanded to include:
- Truro Central School (317 Route 6)
- Head of the Meadow Beach (0 Head of the Meadow Road)
- Corn Hill Beach (48 Corn Hill Road)
- Harbormaster Office (75 Depot Road)
- Transfer Station (5 Town Dump Road/115 Route 6)
- Snow’s Field (14 Snows Field Road)
- Beach Office (36 Shore Road)
This connectivity will encompass approximately 15 miles of fiber-optic cable. David Wennerberg, Director of Information Technologies, Town of Truro, commented, “The Town of Truro is grateful for the funding from the State of Massachusetts and is excited to expand Truro’s municipal fiber network by connecting these seven remote locations to the Town’s current fiber network. These remote locations (that currently act as stand-alone computer silos) will be able to share all I.T. resources available on the WAN, such as applications, servers, and peripheral devices residing on the network as well as allowing for remote access to these locations eliminating travel time for trouble shooting and installs. Additionally, building this fiber backbone will bring fiber closer to residential areas along the fiber path allowing residents to tap into the fiber for internet and other services without incurring the expense of bringing fiber to their residence from Route 6. Truro still has a long way to go in building out a town-wide fiber network, but this grant gives us a great start and builds momentum.” More information is available at Municipal Fiber Grant Program | Mass.gov.
